First Impressions Matter More Than You Think. Don’t Blow It

Dost, in America, first impressions are valued more - far more - than you may expect.   In America, you may not have the luxury of gradually shaping people’s opinions of you over time.  Here, Americans move fast and tend to be, shall we say, short on attention span.  They will make snap judgments about you that will stick.

If you want to keep warming that cubicle, you need to treat first meetings with care. The “dos and don’ts” in this article should help.

DO

1. Introduce Yourself
In America, staying silent in a meeting doesn’t make you invisible; it makes you stand out more.

2. Make Eye Contact
In America averting your eyes is not considered a sign of respect, but rather, shows you lack confidence.

3. Offer “Small Talk”
Americans may expect light conversation before getting down to business. Silence can be awkward. Be ready to discuss topics like the weather and the news.

4. Change A-Dress
Dress codes can vary widely in different situations: be sure to ask ahead of time about the proper attire.

5. Get the Nod
Beware of differences in body language. Often it’s the reverse of what you’re used to (a side-to-side nod means “no” not “yes”).

6. Shake Hands
A handshake is customary whenever you join or part company.

DON’T

7. Go Too Far With Small Talk
Personal topics are strictly off limits with strangers. Leave age and marital status off the table until drinks are on the table! (And you’d be wise not to touch income or religion.)

8. Interrupt
Don’t do it. In the American workplace, everyone expects to receive the respect of a social peer.

9. Argue
If a problem is raised at work, look into it first, before you object, even if you don’t agree. In America, everyone from the CEO on down receives criticisms routinely. Don’t take it personally. (See: MeltingSpot: American’s Love to Hear You Say You’re Sorry)

10. Eat
No one cares for strong odors in the workplace, and microwave popcorn and curry are known to be among the worst offenders. Best to be safe and skip food altogether in meetings (luncheon meetings excepted).
